Teachers in Massachusetts are required to obtain, demonstrate and update a variety of skills that prepare them to design and deliver effective classroom instruction that addresses the standards set forth in the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks, as well as make positive contributions to their broader school community. Teachers must be well versed in both subject matter knowledge - the body of knowledge that is relevant to the academic subject or subjects that they teach - and pedagogical knowledge - the body of knowledge and skills that are related to the practice of teaching (i.e., designing mechanisms to assess student understanding, using age appropriate instructional strategies, etc.).
