Title II-B: Massachusetts Mathematics and Science Partnerships Program

Purpose: The purpose of this grant program is to improve student achievement in mathematics, science, and technology/engineering through intensive, high-quality professional development activities that focus on deepening teachers' content and practice knowledge; and developing instructionally useful measures of student learning growth relative to subject matter standards. Funded programs will be eligible for one additional year of funding based on yearly progress towards meeting their established goals and objectives and the availability of federal funding. In year two of the program, recipients may receive additional funds depending on the number of course offerings.

Result of Funding: This grant award will fund five partnerships that include eleven high needs school districts, five mathematics and science departments at institutions of higher education, and other partners. This year, these partnerships will involve 155 teachers who are currently teaching mathematics, science, and technology/engineering, as well as teachers of ELL students and those with disabilities. Substantial courses of study will be offered for 3-8 teachers to enhance their content knowledge in proportional reasoning mathematics and K-12 teachers in science and technology/Engineering; and to create instructionally useful measure of student learning growth. Follow-up activities such as learning communities and online collaborative work are an integral part of the grants in order to support the implementation of the content from the courses into the classroom.
