Result of Funding: Research demonstrates that the majority of students can learn to read and write through effective classroom instruction. Some students need short-term individualized intervention in order to do so. This grant will support the training of new and established teachers of Reading Recovery, a research-based intervention for early literacy in first grade. Funds are awarded to districts with a Reading Recovery program, as well as Educational Collaboratives that support a Reading Recovery regional training site, to support ongoing professional development in early literacy intervention for implementing teachers; initial intensive training for new Reading Recovery teachers; and ongoing documentation and evaluation of results for students involved in Reading Recovery.
