Grants and Other Financial Assistance Programs: FY2012

Title I, Part A
Fund Code: 305

Purpose: Title I, as reauthorized under the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB), provides supplemental resources to local school districts to assist low achieving students in high poverty schools to meet the state's challenging academic standards.
Priorities: The priorities of Title I are to:
  1. strengthen the core program in schools and provide academic and/or support services to low achieving students at the preschool, elementary, middle, and high school levels in support of NCLB goals;
  2. provide programs based on scientifically based research that enable participating students to achieve the learning standards of the state curriculum frameworks;
  3. elevate significantly the quality of instruction by providing staff with substantial opportunities for professional development; and
  4. involve parents of participating public and private school children in the development of and participation in the program, activities, and procedures for parents and students to improve student achievement.
Eligibility: A district is eligible to receive funds based on criteria established by the United States Department of Education. Grants are awarded to local school districts after state review and approval of the local plan.
Funding: Title I, Part A allocations will be posted on the Grants Management website when they become available.
Fund Use: Funds may be used to provide academic, instructional, and support services for eligible students, professional development activities for staff, support for parent involvement activities, and the purchase of appropriate supplies and materials.

The Department's Title I website contains additional resources to assist districts in their submission of Title I grant applications. Note: Applications submitted or approved after September 1, 2011 can legally claim expenses to the grant only from the date of final Department approval. Therefore, it is essential to have district contact staff who can be reached in July and August to respond to questions, as needed.
