Grants and Other Financial Assistance Programs: FY2012

Title I Commendation Schools Dissemination Grant
Fund Code: 316-C

Purpose:The purpose of this federally funded grant program is to recognize the 2011-2012 Title I Commendation Schools in the Commissioner's Districts that have substantially narrowed the achievement gap for certain student groups, have shown high growth for two consecutive years, and/or have exited NCLB accountability status.
Priority: The priority for this grant is to support the dissemination of effective practices from Commendation Schools to other Title I schools and enhance district systems for supporting schools' narrowing of achievement gaps (e.g., for English language learners, students with disabilities, and others) through:
  • providing a reward of $15,000 each to Title I Commendation Schools to support continuation of successful strategies and practices that led to their improvements;
  • supporting district-led systems and strategies for disseminating effective practices from Commendation Schools to other Title I schools in the district;
  • creating, expanding, or enhancing systems of support to identify and address the learning needs of all students and accelerate the elimination of achievement gaps; and
  • inviting voluntary participation in a statewide network for sharing effective practice.
Note: Grantees must participate in a statewide dissemination study, conducted by an independent organization, which may include focus groups and/or interviews, surveys, and observations of meetings and classrooms.
Eligibility:The following Commissioner's Districts with Title I Commendation Schools may apply: Boston, Fall River, Lawrence, Lowell, Springfield, and Worcester.
Funding: Up to $212,500 is available for each eligible school district. The district award includes a $15,000 reward for each Title I Commendation School in the district (see eligible schools list) to continue strategies and initiatives that led to their improvements. Remaining funds are to be used by the district to support priorities outlined above.
Fund Use: All expenditures must be consistent with categories listed in the Priority section above and may include stipends, consultant fees, travel for professional development, materials purchases, and other directly related costs.
