The Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education is strongly committed to achieving the national and state literacy goals for our young children. I have personally made this area a priority for my tenure as Commissioner and intend to work vigorously with the Governor, Board of Education, and members of the Massachusetts Reading and Literacy Partnership to ensure we achieve our literacy goals. The basic skill of learning to read and the ultimate goal of reading well for pleasure, knowledge and fulfillment should be the first priority of all educational institutions and our first obligation to our children.
