Lists of School Staff Qualified to Administer the MELA-O to Limited English Proficient (LEP) Students
Massachusetts English Language Assessment-Oral (MELA-O) is the state-mandated annual assessment of listening and speaking skills in English for LEP students in grades K-12. It is one required component of the state's Massachusetts English Proficiency Assessment (MEPA) and may also be used, at local discretion, as a diagnostic tool for assessing a student's progress in learning to speak and understand English.
The MELA-O is administered by observing students performing academic and social tasks in the classroom, and is scored in five areas, using the MELA-O Scoring Matrix. Only a Qualified MELA-O Administrator (QMA) or a Qualified MELA-O Trainer (QMT) may conduct the MELA-O for the purpose of reporting results to the state for MEPA.
QMTs and QMAs may continue to administer the MELA-O until January 31, 2010, at which time they must have been retrained and requalified using new materials developed by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education in order to conduct the MELA-O for MEPA. For more information, please refer to the Commissioner's Memo regarding MELA-O Requalification.
