Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System

2011, High School Technology/Engineering

  Question 11: Open-Response
A group of students is designing a solar cooker. As part of the design process, the students must test a prototype to see if it is able to boil water.
  1. Identify one step in the engineering design process the students should do before testing the prototype.
  2. Explain why the step you identified in part (a) is important in the engineering design process as it relates to the solar cooker.
  3. Identify one step in the engineering design process the students should do after they test the prototype.
  4. Explain why the step you identified in part (c) is important in the engineering design process as it relates to the solar cooker.

Scoring Guide and Sample Student Work
Select a score point in the table below to view the sample student response.

ScoreDescription
4 Response demonstrates a thorough understanding of the engineering design process. The response correctly identifies one step before the testing of the prototype and one step after the testing of the prototype, and clearly explains why these steps are important in the engineering design process.
4
3
Response demonstrates a general understanding of the engineering design process.
2
Response demonstrates a limited understanding of the engineering design process.
1
Response demonstrates a minimal understanding of the engineering design process.
0
Response is incorrect or contains some correct work that is irrelevant to the skill or concept being measured.

Note: There are 2 sample student responses for Score Point 4.

In 2011, the Department did not release any questions from the high school Chemistry and Technology/Engineering tests.
This was done in order to support the future development of tests in these subjects.
