2011, Grade 5 Science and Technology/Engineering

  Question 21: Open-Response
A group of students is building a cart with some of the materials and tools shown below. The cart will be used to move boxes between classrooms.
The picture shows many items: four steel brackets, four wheels, four small boards, large board, scissors, wrench, pliers, screwdriver, many screw eyes, many wood screws, many nuts and bolts, and a coil of rope.
  1. Identify which type of fasteners would be best for attaching the wheels to the steel brackets.
  2. Identify two tools that could be used to attach the wheels to the steel brackets with the fasteners you identified in part (a).
The students attach the wheels and brackets to the large board. They pull the cart with a piece of rope. When the students use the cart to move a box, however, the box slides off the cart.
  1. Describe how the students could improve the cart so that the box stays on the cart when the students move it. Be sure to identify which materials and tools the students should use.

Scoring Guide and Sample Student Work
Select a score point in the table below to view the sample student response.

ScoreDescription
4 The response demonstrates a thorough understanding of the appropriate materials and tools to construct a given prototype. The response correctly identifies the best fasteners and two tools for attaching wheels to brackets, and clearly explains how to improve the cart so that the box will stay on the cart when it is moved.
4
3
The response demonstrates a general understanding of the appropriate materials and tools to construct a given prototype.
2
The response demonstrates a limited understanding of the appropriate materials and tools to construct a given prototype.
1
The response demonstrates a minimal understanding of the appropriate materials and tools to construct a given prototype.
0
The response is incorrect or contains some correct work that is irrelevant to the skill or concept being measured.
