Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System

2013, Grade 5 Science and Technology/Engineering

  Question 21: Open-Response
The students in a class want to build the type of seesaw shown below. The students can make the seesaw out of any material, but they know some materials have properties that make them a better choice to use for the seesaw than other materials.
A seesaw is a long board with handles on each end. The board is balanced in the middle on a central point which allows the board to swing up and down when people sit on either end.
  1. Identify one material that would be a good choice for the students to use to build the seesaw.
  2. Describe two properties of the material you identified in part (a) that make it a good choice to use to build the seesaw.
  3. Describe one design feature that the students should consider before building the seesaw. Explain your answer.

Scoring Guide and Sample Student Work
Select a score point in the table below to view the sample student response.

ScoreDescription
4 The response demonstrates a thorough understanding of how to identify materials used to accomplish a design task based on a specific property. The response correctly identifies one material that would be a good choice to use to build the seesaw and clearly describes two properties of the material that make it a good choice to use to build the seesaw. The response clearly describes one design feature students should consider before building the seesaw and explains the answer.
4
3
The response demonstrates a general understanding of how to identify materials used to accomplish a design task based on a specific property.
2
The response demonstrates a limited understanding of how to identify materials used to accomplish a design task based on a specific property.
1
The response demonstrates a minimal understanding of how to identify materials used to accomplish a design task based on a specific property.
0 Response is incorrect or contains some correct work that is irrelevant to the skill or concept being measured.

Note: There are 2 sample student responses for Score Point 4.
