2014, High School Intro Physics

  Question 44: Open-Response
A person brings a cup of hot chocolate (70°C) into a room (20°C) and places a metal spoon (20°C) into the hot chocolate.
  1. Describe what happens to the temperatures of the hot chocolate, the spoon, and the air in the room after 10 minutes. Explain your answer.
  2. Identify and describe the primary method of heat energy transfer (conduction, convection, or radiation) between each of the following:
    • the hot chocolate and the spoon
    • the hot chocolate and the air in the entire room
  3. At what point will the net transfer of heat energy stop?

Scoring Guide and Sample Student Work
Select a score point in the table below to view the sample student response.

ScoreDescription
4 The response demonstrates a thorough understanding of the methods of heat transfer and thermal equilibrium. The response clearly describes the temperature changes in the spoon, hot chocolate, and the air in the room. The response correctly identifies and clearly explains the primary method of heat transfer between the hot chocolate and the spoon, and between the hot chocolate and the air in the room. The response also clearly describes when the net heat transfer will stop.
4
3 The response demonstrates a general understanding of the methods of heat transfer and thermal equilibrium.
2 The response demonstrates a limited understanding of the methods of heat transfer and thermal equilibrium.
1 The response demonstrates a minimal understanding of the methods of heat transfer and thermal equilibrium.
0 The response is incorrect or contains some correct work that is irrelevant to the skill or concept being measured.

Note: There are 2 sample student responses for Score Point 4.
