Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System

2014, High School Technology/Engineering

  Question 33: Open-Response
The diagram below shows a keyless car entry system.
The diagram shows the electrical system in the front part of a car connected to the door lock on the driver’s door. Outside the car, a hand is holding a battery-operated device that has a lock button and an unlock button.
Many cars use a keyless entry system, which allows the doors to be locked remotely. To use this system, the driver pushes a button on a small battery-operated device. The button turns on the encoder in the device. A signal is then sent to the car’s electrical system, which activates the locking mechanism.
  1. Identify the type of signal that travels from the button to the encoder in the battery-operated device.
  2. Describe the function of this encoder and identify the type of signal sent through the air to the car.
  3. Describe the function of the decoder in this keyless entry system.
  4. Identify the destination in this system.

Scoring Guide and Sample Student Work
Select a score point in the table below to view the sample student response.

ScoreDescription
4 The response demonstrates a thorough understanding of the components of a communication system. The response correctly identifies the type of signal that travels from the button to the encoder. The response clearly describes the function of the encoder, correctly identifies the type of signal sent through the air to the car, and clearly describes the function of the decoder. The response also correctly identifies the destination in this system.
4
3 The response demonstrates a general understanding of the components of a communication system.
2 The response demonstrates a limited understanding of the components of a communication system.
1 The response demonstrates a minimal understanding of the components of a communication system.
0 The response is incorrect or contains some correct work that is irrelevant to the skill or concept being measured.

Note: There are 2 sample student responses for Score Point 4.
