The diagram below shows a storage tank, piping, and a pump for a building’s sprinkler system. The sprinkler system is located in the ceiling.
The diagram shows a water supply pipe entering a water storage tank from below. Two separate one inch diameter pipes exit the top of the storage tank. The two pipes come together above the storage tank in a T-shaped fitting that leads to a section of one half inch pipe. The one half inch pipe is connected to a pump which then leads to the sprinkler heads.
When the sprinkler system is on, water is pumped from the storage tank through the building’s ceiling piping to the sprinkler heads.
  1. Identify the sprinkler system as an open system or a closed system. Explain your answer.
  1. Describe how the decrease in pipe diameter, from 1 in. to one-half in., affects the resistance to water flow as water moves through the pipes.
  1. Describe one advantage and one disadvantage of using copper piping instead of PVC piping for the sprinkler system.
