Question 15

Idea Development - Score Point 2

The central idea of both passages is somewhat developed with a limited expression of ideas about "tough working conditions of the mills." When the essay discusses the working wage of "a dollar a week," limited evidence from the passages is included, and this evidence is not clearly connected to the central idea. Later, the observation that "waking up at five in the morning and working day and night that seems like too much for younger girls" is a good recognition of the challenging working conditions in the mills, but the essay ends shortly after making this point. Overall, there is partial awareness of the task in explaining the common central idea.

Standard English Conventions - Score Point 2

The essay demonstrates mostly consistent control of Standard English conventions. Some sentences lack beginning capitalization. For example, "as it states in 'Lyddie' [Lyddie] that 'within five minutes, her head felt like a log being split into splinters.'" Sentence structures are simple and often repeated, an example being the repeated use of "also" as a transition. Because the sentence structures and grammar of the essay are mostly simple but otherwise correct, the conventions are considered mostly controlled.
Answer for Idea Development Score Point 2, and Standard English Conventions Score Point 2
In the two texts "Lucy Larcom and Harriet Hanson" and "Lyddie" both have a central idea that is about the tough working conditions of the mills.

as it states in "Lyddie" that "within five minutes, her head felt like a log being split into splinters." if within five minutes her head felt like that the place must be extremely dusty and have poor ventilation. this is an example of a central idea because it portrays that they have really bad working spaces. It states in "Lucy Larcom and Harriet Hanson" that "The windows were nailed shut and the room was hot and damp. Her wage was a dollar a week." this proves our cental idea because it creates imagery that its a sweat filled room and everyone is breathing the same air. Also that she gets paid a dollar a week! She gets paid one dollar to work day and night every day a week! It also states in the same passage that "Each day started at five in the morning with a bone-rattling blast from the factory whistle." That tells us that you can't be late or else. Also waking up at five in the morning and working day and night that seemes like too much for younger girls.

In conclusion, the central idea of the two passages is that they had to work in terrible conditions at a young age.
