Baker-Polito Administration Awards $3.38 Million to Continue Turnaround Efforts in Eight Schools

MALDEN - The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education has awarded more than $3 million in continued federal funding to Fall River, Lawrence, New Bedford and Springfield to build districts' capacity to support and sustain turnaround work in eight underperforming schools. This renewal award is a continuation of competitive federal grant funding that supports the Commonwealth's efforts to improve student achievement in the lowest performing schools. These districts initially applied for three years of funding, and renewal applications are required for schools to receive their second and third year of funds. Today's award will fund eight schools starting in fall 2015, and additional renewal applications remain under review. The money will be used differently in different schools and will help pay for improvement strategies such as longer school days, increased professional development for educators and academic enrichment programs for students. "We are focused on helping districts that need it most, and these grants are crucial in accelerating turnaround efforts in these schools," said Governor Charlie Baker. "It's critical that the students, especially in these districts, are given every chance to succeed and receive the high-quality education they deserve." "I am pleased to help these schools advance their turnaround work, and I look forward to seeing students benefit as a result," said Commissioner of Elementary and Secondary Education Mitchell D. Chester. All eight awarded schools are Level 4 ("underperforming") schools under the state's accountability system, which classifies schools as Level 1-5. The eight schools serve more than 6,500 students. Districts received the following School Redesign Grant renewals on behalf of the schools listed: Fall River: $460,690
  • Watson Elementary School
Lawrence: $754,959
  • Oliver Partnership School
  • UP Academy Oliver Middle School
New Bedford: $668,371
  • Hayden-McFadden Elementary School
  • New Bedford High School
Springfield: $1,492,404
  • DeBerry Elementary School
  • Milton Bradley Elementary School
  • High School of Science and Technology
Under the Achievement Gap Act of 2010, Massachusetts has focused federal and local resources on identifying and improving the state's lowest performing schools.
