Updates on Social and Emotional Learning:

The Department has two updates to share related to social and emotional learning:
  • From 2016-2018, DESE participated in the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning’s (CASEL's) two-year Collaborating States Initiative. This summary document provides brief highlights of DESE’s efforts to support social and emotional learning during our participation in the Collaborating State Initiative and previews the direction in which we are headed.
  • The importance of a culturally responsive approach to social and emotional learning has been a recurrent theme in conversations with Massachusetts educators and with colleagues across the country. In response to this theme, DESE is pleased to present SEL for All, a guidance document that includes a reflection guide with worksheets. We are deeply grateful to educators across Massachusetts and the country whose contributions were instrumental to the development of this document.

Picture of the Week:

On May 30, 2018, Commissioner Riley visited Worcester, where his stops included the Goddard School of Science and Technology. In this classroom, he joined students as they worked with tangrams.
Commissioner sits at a table in a classroom with three students, one of whom is showing him what they're doing with yellow tangrams.

Innovation Pathway Designations and Grants Announced:

On May 22, 2018, the Baker-Polito Administration announced that programs in four districts – Nantucket, Northampton, Uxbridge, and Worcester – have been designated Innovation Pathways and that the four districts will receive a total of $433,710 in grants to launch programs that connect learning to a particular career pathway as part of the High Quality College and Career Pathways Initiative. The Innovation Pathways that these districts will create will provide work-based learning experiences along with college-level coursework. The pathways are designed to expose students to specific high-demand industries, such as information technology, engineering, healthcare, the life sciences, and advanced manufacturing. Congratulations to all four districts!
