The Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (Department) regrets to announce that the 73rd annual Student Government Day has been cancelled due to restrictions on gatherings related to COVID-19. The event was scheduled for Friday, April 3, 2020.
The Department plans to post videos of some of the speakers scheduled to attend and resources on the Student Government Day website in early April for students and advisors to view when time permits. The bills and roles assigned to students will be emailed to Faculty Advisors to share with the students. Students are encouraged to review the bills and send their written testimony to studgovday@doe.mass.edu . Registered students selected as the designees and the alternates will receive their signed certificates via mail.
I would like to congratulate all the students elected to represent their schools at Student Government Day. Even though the in-person event is cancelled, those who ran demonstrated a strong commitment to learning more about the legislative process. I would like specifically applaud Caitlyn Bailey of Norton High School, who won the speech competition to serve as the Student Governor for 2020. This statutory program represents just one way our state values opportunities for students to exercise engage citizenship. In her speech, which will also be available on the website, Caitlyn stated: "As the next generation of citizens, voters, and even politicians, we have the power to make change."
