Massachusetts English Language Arts Curriculum Framework Review Panel

I am writing to invite you to nominate educators and community members to serve on the panel to review and refine the Massachusetts English Language Arts Curriculum Framework Download PDF Document  Download MS WORD Document that was adopted by the Board of Education in 2001. The panel will review the framework to determine if modifications are needed to reflect current research on learning and achievement in reading, writing, and communication skills needed for college and 21st century careers.

To allow the panel to begin its work in November, nominations Download PDF Document  Download MS WORD Document must be submitted by Monday, October 22, 2007. Applicants selected for appointment to the panel will be notified by early November.

The Department seeks nominations from elementary, middle, and high schools, institutions of higher education, community members, and the business community. We are seeking wide representation, including:

  • educators who teach English language arts in elementary and secondary schools and introductory college writing, reading, and literature courses;
  • educators who have incorporated literacy instruction in science, history, mathematics, arts, comprehensive health, or vocational/technical courses;
  • community members, including parents, school committee members, and librarians;
  • business personnel with experience in hiring and training employees in communication skills; and
  • researchers in the fields of literacy, language development, reading, writing, and media.

The panel will meet monthly between November 2007 and April 2008. It will present a list of recommended refinements to the Framework to the Board of Education in January 2008 and a final draft to the Board in April.

Panel members will receive Professional Development Points, and districts will be reimbursed for the cost of substitute teachers if necessary.
