The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (ESE) will offer the following professional development opportunities during July 2008.

  • Category 4 - Secondary Training of Trainers (TOT) Making the Connection: ELLs and Subject Matter Texts July 8, 9, 10, 2008 and follow-up session December 9, 2008 Leominster Four Points Sheraton
Audience: Teams of ESL and Reading teachers/specialists
  • Workshop: Content-based ESL Instruction and Curriculum Development July 21-22 or July 24-25, 2008, plus half-day follow-up session July 28 or July 31, 2008.
Audience: Individual or teams of ESL teachers

The Category 4 trainer application outlines both the required trainer qualifications and the amount of time the district must commit to offering at least one cohort of teacher training during the 2008-09 school year. These subsequent, locally- scheduled professional development sessions should become an integral part of your district's "Strategic Plan for SEI PD" for the 2008-2009 school year.

Those candidates selected and trained for the Making the Connection: ELLs and Subject Matter Texts (Category 4 - Secondary) training will be observed by an ESE representative from the Office of Language Acquisition and Academic Achievement when they offer training in your district. They will also need to be released to attend a Trainers Follow-Up Session on the date indicated on the attached training schedule. Please make sure that your Superintendent understands the commitment being made by the district before he/she signs each application form.

The workshop, Content-based ESL Curriculum Development and Instruction, will serve as an introduction to the tools the Department has been developing over the past two years to assist districts and ESL teachers to develop ESL curricula and curricular units based on academic content. These tools are based on the Massachusetts English Language Proficiency Benchmarks and Outcomes.

Application materials may be faxed to Simone Harvey, Office of Language Acquisition and Academic Achievement, at 781-338-3318, or mailed to the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education at the address indicated at the top of this letterhead. All application materials should be submitted at the same time. Training teams should submit their application materials together, and indicate in a cover memo the names of the two individuals on their prospective training team. Late applications will not be considered.

Any questions regarding the training sessions or the application forms should by referred to Amanda Lebleu 781-338-3580 or at alebleu@doe.mass.edu.

Please encourage qualified individuals in your district or region to apply prior to the Thursday, May 1st deadline.
