Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure (MTEL)

General Curriculum Test Licensure Requirements

To:Educator Preparation Program Coordinators and Deans
Copy:Superintendents and Principals
From:Mitchell D. Chester, Ed.D., Commissioner of Elementary and Secondary Education
Date:December 2, 2008

The purpose of this communication is to review the changing requirements for the General Curriculum test of the Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure (MTEL). A passing score on the General Curriculum test is one of the test requirements for Massachusetts elementary and special education teacher licenses. Starting with the March 7, 2009 test administration, a redeveloped General Curriculum test will replace the current test. The new test will have two separately scored subtests: the Multi-Subject subtest (Language Arts, History & Social Science, and Science & Technology/Engineering) and the Mathematics subtest. A passing score on both subtests is required to meet the General Curriculum test requirement - similar to the two-part test requirement for the Communication and Literacy Skills test. Please note that a passing score on the Elementary Mathematics (53), Middle School Mathematics (47), or Mathematics (5-12) (09) test will be accepted in lieu of a passing score on the General Curriculum Mathematics subtest. Candidates will be able to register for one or both subtests for the four-hour test session. The test fee will remain the same ($100, or $50 per subtest). Candidates who have passed the "old" General Curriculum test will not be required to pass either subtest of the new test. Please refer to the Department's MTEL website for complete background information about the new General Curriculum test, Practice Test, and Test Objectives. If you have any questions regarding this information, please contact Judy Sohn-White of Educator Preparation and Quality at 781-338-6254 or jsohnwhite@doe.mass.edu.
