Request for Qualified Reviewers for Virtual School Applications

The Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education is seeking qualified individuals in diverse fields to join us in reviewing virtual school applications. Below is a brief synopsis to familiarize you with the application process as well as a volunteer form for you to complete and submit (along with a resume and/or biography) if you are interested in participating.

Why serve on an application review team?

Virtual education is growing rapidly, both in Massachusetts and nationally. Serving on a virtual school application review team is a unique opportunity to learn more about these public schools and to contribute to this important initiative. Your expertise will help make the virtual school review process as robust and fair as possible-and, therefore more, valuable to the schools and to the public.

What are we looking for in volunteers?

We are in search of volunteers with knowledge of online and traditional education, and with expertise in areas such as educational leadership, teaching, curriculum development, K-12 research, special education, English language development education, program evaluation, and non-profit governance. If you think your experience and professional expertise might be valuable in our review of virtual schools, please contact us by completing and submitting the volunteer interest form (see below).

What happens during the virtual school application review?

Volunteers will be asked to read and comment on one or two virtual school applications in October/November. For each proposal reviewed, volunteers will participate in a meeting in Malden in November/December to discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the application. (Applications are limited to 60 pages, plus attachments.) Application reviewers play an essential advisory role in the formulation of the Department's recommendations to the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education, which will award certificates to the most promising applicant(s).
