Proprietary School Advisory Council

The Commissioner is committed to appointing a council that will work actively to help improve proprietary school programs while serving and protecting the students of those programs. Council members are chosen because of their demonstrated interest in and commitment to education reform, as well as interest, experience, and expertise in proprietary schools educations. Through diverse membership on the council, the Department seeks to draw on the perspectives and experiences of a wide range of constituents in order to strengthen proprietary school education.

Council Purpose:

The Proprietary Schools Advisory Council advises the Commissioner of Education on matters pertinent to the development of proprietary school education in the Commonwealth. To accomplish that goal, the Council will:

  • assess statewide trends and needs;
  • seek public and professional input;
  • analyze information regarding proprietary schools;
  • advise and make recommendations regarding regulations, and guidelines; and,
  • provide other programmatic recommendations, as it deems necessary, to fulfill the goals established by the Board of Education.

The Proprietary Schools Advisory Council Goals:

  • To make recommendations to the Department on policies and procedures to enhance the Department's function in its role of consumer protection.
  • To make recommendations to the Department on policies and procedures to enhance the quality of proprietary school education within the Commonwealth.
  • To make recommendations to the Department on policies and procedures to enhance the quality of proprietary school curriculum and teacher qualifications.
  • To make recommendations to the Department on policies and procedures to improve student completion and placement rates.
  • To make recommendations to the Department on strategies to improve communications between the Department and students, schools, and other interested parties.
