Brief Description of Services
The mission of the Adult Numeracy Center at TERC is to provide quality mathematics and numeracy professional development and resources to education practitioners, administrators, and community groups. Our Center strives to create engaging mathematics learning experiences accessible to educators of all math comfort levels. Our professional development services include content-specific offerings for topics including the four basic operations, algebra, the integration of mathematics into ESOL classrooms, and more. All our offerings are designed to help practitioners strengthen their math content knowledge while they also learn strategies to teach for understanding. We also offer several courses that help practitioners understand the key aspects of the College and Career Readiness Standards for Adult Education, integrate them in lesson planning, and use them to designing program-wide curricula. In addition, our Center is available to provide customized coaching, modeling, and technical assistance to individuals and small groups who want guidance in teaching conceptually and with more rigor. Over the years, we have led a number of national initiatives, including Teachers Investigating Adult Numeracy, Adult Numeracy Initiative, and Adults Reaching Algebra Readiness. Since 2014, the Adult Numeracy Center has also managed the SABES PD Center for Mathematics and Adult Numeracy, serving Massachusetts adult education professionals.
