Massachusetts Reading First Plan (MRFP)

There are five core components of the Massachusetts' Reading First project: 1) leadership for literacy; 2) core and intervention curriculum and instructional approaches; 3) valid and reliable formative and summative assessments to drive instructional decision making; 4) ongoing and sustained professional development in early reading; and 5) technical assistance to support the implementation of Reading First and improvements in proficiency in reading. Each of the five components of the Massachusetts Reading First project draws upon the most current scientifically based reading research (SBRR) as the underpinning of the state's efforts to deepen educators' knowledge, to improve the delivery of high quality early reading instruction, and increase substantially the percentages and numbers of students who are reading at or above grade level by the end of grade 3. In 2007-2008, 92 schools in 42 districts are participating in Reading First
