2007 Compass School Cohort
2007 Commonwealth Compass Schools Identified
The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education's Office of NCLB Accountability has identified 35 Massachusetts public schools with high performance and/or significant improvement in English language arts (ELA) and/or mathematics during the past two years to be the 2007 Commonwealth Compass Schools.
The hard work and achievement of the 35 schools were recognized and celebrated by Commissioner Driscoll, legislators, and other officials at a ceremony and luncheon in the Great Hall at the State House on February 5, 2007.
Identification of schools was based on meeting one or more of the following data criteria:
Composite Performance Index (CPI) of 95 or above in both ELA and mathematics at the end of Cycle IV (2005-2006), with 40 percent or more performing in the Advanced category in both subjects.
2006 CPI above state average performance in ELA and mathematics that increased the percentage of Proficient & Advanced students by 10 or more percentage points from Cycle III (2003-2004) to Cycle IV (2005-2006) and 5 or more percentage points from Cycle II (2001-2002) to Cycle III.
met or exceeded expected improvement targets with 40% or more disadvantaged students enrolled.
Among the 35 schools identified this year are 23 high schools and 12 elementary schools. The high schools include ten vocational technical, one charter, and one pilot school.
The 2007 Compass Schools received a $2,500 award. During their year as Compass Schools, the Department will gather information on key conditions in place at the schools, including instructional leadership, school year and day schedules, interdisciplinary curricula and project based learning, teacher training, and student engagement.
