School and District Accountability and Assistance

School Improvement Grants

The Department issues both state and federal grants from state and federal school improvement funds throughout the year. In general, the grants are awarded to schools and school districts that have an accountability status. Grants are used for many purposes, including professional development, staffing, and for instructional and non-instructional materials and supplies.

FY10 (School Year) State Grants as of of August 19, 2009

220-E Continuation Support to Underperforming School Districts: Randolph Public Schools The Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education will issue a grant to the Randolph Public Schools in the amount of $75,000 to continue to support the Randolph Parents' Academy and Parents' Support Network funded in FY2009. The specific purpose of the grant is to continue to fund activities critical to improving parental involvement and engagement. The Department will provide the necessary Fund Code 220 grant materials via email to the Randolph Public Schools by August 20, 2009 (due back to the Department no later August 31) and Randolph will provide a short narrative describing the intended use of FY10 funds as well as a report on the initial grant funded in FY09. Materials are to be returned to RFleming@doe.mass.edu.
220Supplementary Support to Specific Underperforming School Districts: Southbridge Turnaround ActivitiesThe Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education will issue a grant to the Southbridge Public Schools in the amount of $42,000 to support ongoing turnaround initiatives. The specific purpose of the grant is to fund summer activities critical to removing Southbridge's status as an underperforming school district. The Department will provide the necessary Fund Code 220 grant materials via email to the Southbridge Public Schools by July 23, 2009 (due back to the Department no later than July 24, 2009) and Southbridge will provide a short narrative describing the intended use of funds. Materials are to be returned to RFleming@doe.mass.edu.

220ESupport to Underperforming School Districts: Randolph Public Schools To support the development of a Randolph Parents' Academy and Parents' Support Network to be operated by the Randolph Public Schools.
220FSupplementary Support to Specific Commissioner's Districts To provide supplementary support to Commissioner's Districts for initiatives related to district-wide instructional leadership, professional development, and assessment activities.
220GSupplementary Support to Specific School Districts: Support to Attract and Maintain High-Quality Instructional Leadership (Hiring Bonus/Salary Differential) in Fall River Public Schools To provide supplementary support to maintain high-quality instructional leadership in the Fall River Public Schools. This support will be in the form of hiring bonuses or salary differentials for principals hired for two chronically underperforming schools, the Matthew J. Kuss and Henry Lord Middle Schools.
221EState Targeted Assistance: Commonwealth Pilot Schools Grant To provide funds to current Commonwealth Pilot Schools to support redesign and restructuring efforts as outlined in the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education approved design plans.
221State Targeted Assistance: Priority I Status Schools (Chronic Underperformance) To continue to support improvement efforts in Fall River schools with Priority I status (Chronic Underperformance).
