Prior to 2008, school review activities were shared by ESE and its independent sister agency, the Office of Educational Quality and Accountability (EQA). By legislation effective August 14, 2008, the Massachusetts Legislature created a Center for School and District Accountability (SDA) within ESE. See Mass. Gen. Laws. c. 15, § 55A. SDA now has the function of reviewing school districts and individual schools.
