SES HEADLINES:
Supplemental educational services (SES) are additional, free, academic instruction designed to increase the academic achievement of students in schools identified for improvement, corrective action or restructuring under the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB). Students from low-income families attending Title I schools in their second year of school improvement (i.e., have not made Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) for three or more years), in corrective action, or in restructuring status are eligible to receive SES.
Note: On February 9, 2012 Massachusetts was granted flexibility from certain provisions of the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB). Under this flexibility, Massachusetts will require districts with low performing schools to reserve federal Title I, Part A funds on a sliding scale to address identified needs that are aligned with the state's research-based Conditions for School Effectiveness, as opposed to mandating the NCLB requirements of school choice, supplemental educational services (SES), and professional development. Consequently, Massachusetts' SES program will be discontinued after the 2011-12 school year, and the tentatively scheduled March 2, 2012 Bidder's Conference for prospective SES providers has been cancelled.
Vendors interested in partnering with Massachusetts districts and schools should monitor contract opportunities offered through the Commonwealth's procurement access and solicitation system, Comm-PASS, as well as the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education's web site: http://www.doe.mass.edu/Assess/. For additional information on the state's waiver request, visit the Department's No Child Left Behind page at http://www.doe.mass.edu/nclb/.
