The YMCA of Greater Boston provides safe, quality after school programming that addresses the unique cultural, social, and educational issues facing the students and families in Boston. We will also be using literacy model which will be provided to SES students for an hour each day, four or five days per week.
We will have activities including Read Aloud, Shout Out, Word Works, Writing and Independent Reading. Read Aloud is the time to develop a theme or topic and a time for adults to provide a model of fluent reading, stopping to think aloud and demonstrate how reading works. Shout out, Word Works and Writing are used to give students continued interaction. We will use books from "The 100 Book Challenge", which involves 30-45 minutes of independent reading.
We will be serving grades K-8 We provide services to Limited English Proficiency students and students with disabilities. |
| Evidence of Effectiveness (written by provider) |
Supplemental Education Services provided through the YMCA of Greater Boston and partnering schools promote positive outcomes for enrolled students on variety of levels.
Teachers report that students enrolled in YMCA Supplemental Education Services make improvement in key areas of learning, including test-taking strategies, use of mathematical operations, solving problems, and reading fluency and comphrehension. Most students who were assessed in their guided reading levels and number of fluency made small to significant gains in their achievement of benchmarks.
Observations of the program groups consistently make evident investment in learning on the part of both students and tutors. Teachers are noted to ask open-minded questions that prompt critical thinking and thoughtful response, as well as clarifying questions and new ideas. Students are encouraged to share strategies and lessions learned. A respectful atmosphere that is conducive to confidence and information-sharing is perpetuated in tutoring groups. Time is allowed for group work and sharing, as well as independent efforts to solve problems, read, and write. Children show enthusiasm for activities and take pride in their successes. |
