| Program Description (written by provider) |
Alliance for Inclusion and Prevention’s (AIP) 11-year partnership with Boston Public Schools (BPS) has helped over 1000 middle school students, including many at high risk of school failure, to succeed. AIP fosters student improvement through 1-on-1 and small-group Supplemental Educational Services (SES) instruction that takes place after-school in Reading, Writing and Math. State-certified teachers link the curriculum to BPS and MA learning standards. For students with multiple risk factors, AIP’s full-time after-school SES academic enrichment program integrates behavioral and prevention approaches with academic supports. After-school parents of eligible students can select SES tutoring as an element of their child’s after-school program schedule. AIP programs motivate students via fun enrichment activity choices and positive relationships with caring adults that develop skills and build confidence.
AIP's SES programs for BPS students take place at the Washington Irving Middle School and the Lilla G. Frederick Pilot Middle School. |
| Evidence of Effectiveness (written by provider) |
Since 1995 the Alliance for Inclusion and Prevention has provided intensive after school academic enrichment and support services to middle school students in the Boston Public Schools. During 2000 - 2002 AIP piloted a research-based after-school support model to improve student achievement for students who were failing to make adequate academic progress. The “Transition to Success Pilot Project” (TSPP) combined BPS Transition tutoring with enrollment in AIP’s on-site after-school program and case management services. The pilot, which ran in six schools, showed that these additional elements improved academic outcomes for students receiving Transition tutoring. AIP now uses the TSPP model in its after school programming at the Washington Irving Middle School. Data below reflects evaluations of TSPP and AIP’s after school program conducted by MSPCC, Goodman Research Group, University of Pennsylvania and AIP parent surveys:
• 23 of 26 students (88%) in AIP’s Transition Pilot Program in FY02 passed their BPS reading and math benchmark tests and were promoted to the next grade level. • 80% of TSPP 6th graders improved their scores on the BPS Scholastic Reading Inventory; 76% of 7th graders improved; and 60% of 8th graders improved. • TSPP students were absent an average of 6 days per year, compared with BPS Transition Tutoring-only students, who were absent an average of 19 days per year. • 71% of TSPP students said the program helped them spend more time on homework. • 54% of students said they tried harder at school because of the after-school program. • 89% of parents said that the after-school program helped their child learn academic skills and 80% said their child’s schoolwork would suffer without the after-school program • 75% of parents said the after school program helped them to increase their connection with the school. • Of the six BPS schools that took part in the Transition Pilot Project, AIP’s Irving Middle School parents scored highest on parent interaction and involvement. • 97% of parents of AIP’s transition after school students surveyed were satisfied with the program. |
