| Program Description (written by provider) |
Generations Incorporated provides one on one literacy tutoring to K-4th grade students in Boston Public Schools. We provide services at multiple locations in the Greater Boston area. To learn more about the organization, visit our website: www.generationsinc.org. Tutors meet one-on-one with each student two or three times a week for 40 minutes using our Reading Coaches model. Our tutors are trained older community residents who care about children's literacy. We measure the Reading Coaches program impact using the Basic Reading Inventory (BRI), which is administered three times a year. Students in our program improve their literacy skills twice as much as they would otherwise.

| Evidence of Effectiveness (written by provider) |
Over the last 15 years, Generations Incorporated has connected children with caring retirees (ages 55+) who serve as literacy tutors and mentors. For nearly a decade we have run the Reading Coaches program to help struggling readers. Through the program, our older adult reading coaches meet with K-4th grade students twice per week in intensive, one-on-one instruction sessions.
During each 40-minute session, the coaches help children read a book. They help them pronounce and understand difficult vocabulary words, help them comprehend the story, and they engage the children in discussion and writing activities that relate to the book.
We measure the program''s impact using the Basic Reading Inventory (BRI), which is administered three times per year. The BRI is used in school districts across the country to measure student''s progress in reading comprehension. The tool was developed by Dr. Jerry Johns, a former president of the International Reading Association and currently a Distinguished Teaching Professor at Northern Illinois University.
According to a recent study by Washington University, students enrolled in our programs made 60% more progress in work deciphering and reading comphrension than their peers that were not enrolled in the program. In additon to the literacy gains, students benefit from our program's high quality intergenerational component. |
