Provider: Partnership for Community Schools in Malden

 Provider Details

 Program Description (written by provider)
The Partnership for Community Schools in Malden will offer comprehensive, hgih-quality reading and math programs for students in grades two through eight who quality for SES funding in the Malden Public Schools. Using hands-on, small-group activities two days per week for 12-16 weeks, we will provide children with the skills they need to overcome barriers to learning and achieve their highest academic potential. Children will also receive individualized instruction when necessary, and help with homework. In our programs students will be given opportunity to delve more deeply into topics that enrich and reinforce classroom learning, and help overcome gaps between school day and after school experiences. Families will play an integral role in the program, and on-going family communication will help ensure success for the children.
Evidence of Effectiveness (written by provider)
As a recipient of the 21st Century Community Learning Centers (CCLC) grant for the past nine years, the Partnership for Community Schools in Malden uses a varietyof evaluation tools to monitor student progress and achievement, and the effectiveness of our programming. They include the following:

Survey of After-School Youth OUtcomes (SAYO) developed by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education in conjunction with the National Institute on Out-of-School Time Center for Research on Women at Wellesley College. This tool measures the progress made by students in programs funded by the 21st CCLC grant. We have recorded data from these grants for the past five years, which comprised a total of 1452 students (2008-2009 results not yet available). The results show that after attending our programs, 57.2% of students raised their scores in reading, 53.4% in written communication, and 56.9% in math problem solving over the past eight years. In addition, 43.3% of students were raised to grade level in reading, 39.4% in written communication, and 41.5% in math problem solving. We will continue to use this tool to measure SES students in the coming year, and will include their results when available.

In addition to the SAYO tool, we also use progress reports with families to track students throughout the course of the program. Teachers monitor the information noted on the progress reports so they can track students who appear to continue having difficulty, are not making appropriate progress, or appear to be losing some abilities. The progress reports are completed and sent home to families bi-weekly. They provide an opportunity to let parents know areas of concern and areas where children are succeeding.

To make the SAYO data we collect even more valuable, we have implemented an Evaluation Tracking Tool which allows our SES staff to meet with classroom teachers monthly to collect SAYO data on our SES participants. By meeting with teachers more formally, we are able to better track student progress and develop more focused, comprehensive action plans for each student.
