Provider: Commonwealth Learning Center

 Provider Details

 Program Description (written by provider)
Commonwealth Learning Center provides one-to-one reading tutoring tailored to the needs of each student. This after school tutorial program addresses the needs of students struggling with reading and spelling. Each student works with his or her own teacher and will see the same teacher for each session. Tutoring focuses on teaching students the "code" of the English language-its sounds, syllable types, patterns, rules, and roots and affixes--in a systematic and hands-on manner utilizing the Orton-Gillingham Approach. Students read aloud and complete dictation exercises at each lesson. Lessons are engaging, multisensory, and customized for each student. The teachers in Commonwealth Learning Center's program are certified specialists who have undergone significant training and have experiences working with struggling readers. They tailor the tutoring sessions so that each student sees success at his or her own pace. We welcome students who have learning disabilities and/or attentional difficulties.
Evidence of Effectiveness (written by provider)
Commonwealth Learning Center uses standardized instruments for pre-testing and post-testing in order to measure student progress. The students are evaluated using standardized tests including the Woodcock-Johnson III, Woodcock Reading Mastery Tests, Comprehensive Test of Phonological Processing, Test of Written Spelling-4, and Test of Written Language-3. Results are detailed in written reports indicating the student’s performance in terms of standard scores, percentile ranks, and grade equivalent as compared to their national age-mates. Students are re-evaluated every nine to twelve months of attendance. CLC uses percentile ranks to document student growth over time. In 2005-2006, a sample group of 10 students increased their word attack skills an average of 15.5 percentile points and increased their spelling skills an average 16.3 percentile points in one school year. Six of these ten students were diagnosed with language-based learning disabilities while four in the sample were students with no learning disabilities who simply had not had enough direct instruction in phonics in their regular school program.
