| Program Description (written by provider) |
The Boston Urban Youth Foundation's after school program seeks to prepare today's youth for tomorrows work by providing academic and social development. BUYF has had a lot of success improving school engagement, attendance, performance, and college preparedness. BUYF's after school programming includes:
1.Passkey tutorial sessions in which students learn at their own pace through interactive computer-aided learning exercises that strengthen their reading, language arts and math skills. Pre and Post tests assess growth in students skills.
2. One on One and small group tutorial sessions that focus on strengthening students' reading comprehension and language arts skills through reading and writing exercises and through guided discussions regarding a variety of texts.
3. Increasing the knowledge and experience about the political, economic, and community structures of our city and world. |

Assessment, Goal Setting, Monitoring Student Progress and Communication with Schools
1. The process for identifying skill/knowledge gaps and other individual student needs and to prescribe an instructional program with clearly defined goals and a timetable based on the student’s individual needs—At the commencement of each student’s participation in the SES tutoring program, BUYF’s tutors will meet with teachers to review the Individual Student Success Plan (if the student has previously scored in the failing/warning category on an MCAS test), to identify student achievement gaps and weaknesses and to establish individual student tutoring objectives. In addition, all students will be given Passkey pre-tests at the start of their involvement in the SES Program to document their grade level proficiency in reading and math. This pre-test will be used to establish baseline data for each student, and to further identify specific skills gaps and weaknesses that should be addressed in the tutoring program. The BUYF SES Program staff will use the data obtained through the above-discussed meetings, review of Individual Student Success Plans and Passkey pre-tests to prescribe an instructional program tailored the specific needs and skills gaps of each student. The process for developing each individual instructional program is comprised of the following components—
a) Using the results of the Passkey pre-test, Passkey will automatically select lessons designed to address specific identified skills gaps. BUYF staff will review the lessons selected by Passkey to ensure that they address the skills gaps identified by teachers, as well as those identified via the pre-test. BUYF staff will modify the lesson selection, as necessary, to better address the needs and learning styles of each student. Students will use Passkey at least 30 minutes each day. The lesson selection will be reviewed by BUYF staff on a frequent basis, along with the results of interim Passkey assessments, to ensure that the Passkey lessons remain appropriate to the student’s needs and skills gaps over the course of the SES Program.
b) Using the results of the Passkey pre-test, the Individual Student Success Plans and data obtained from meetings with teachers, BUYF staff will design an individual tutoring plan that describes how the student will use Passkey and how Passkey instruction will be supplemented with one-on-one and small group direct tutoring in reading and math and with learning exercises to build reading comprehension, writing and oral communication skills. The individual tutoring plan will list student learning objectives tied to specific achievement measures and timetables. It will list the skills gaps that the tutoring will address. It will outline the Passkey lessons and other tutoring activities that have been prescribed. Where small group tutoring is prescribed, students will be matched, to the degree possible, by similar ages and proficiency levels. The individual tutoring plan will also document the commitment of each student to attend tutoring sessions and perform all assigned work, and it will be signed by the student, a BUYF tutor and at least one parent. BUYF staff will meet with the student, the student’s English/reading and/or math teachers and the student’s parents, and the input of each of these stakeholders will be incorporated in the plan. Also, each student’s individual tutoring plan will be reviewed by the student’s reading and/or math teacher(s) and by the student’s parents prior to the commencement of tutoring.
c) BUYF will utilize grades, MCAS scores, teacher reports, and passkey test to monitor student progress |
