| Program Description (written by provider) |
| The Supplemental Tutoring and Enrichment Program of the Framingham Public Schools provides targeted tutoring to those students who have an identified need in reading, writing and/or mathematics. Students receive tutoring after school in individual and small group settings. Highly qualified teachers provide tutoring, most of who are currently teaching in the Framingham Public Schools. We use a variety of materials that are consistent with school-based instruction, including the SuccessMaker computer program. We offer tutoring in English, Portuguese and Spanish, depending upon the student’s language of instruction. |
| Evidence of Effectiveness (written by provider) |
During the 2007-2008 school year, 40 students received tutoring in at least one subject area. Students were administered the Afterschool Achievers: Math Club and Reading Club pretests in the first session, and the parallel post-tests in the final session. The average score for ELA increased by 18 points, and the average score for Mathematics increased by 16 points.
A second component of the Supplemental Tutoring Program is the utilization of the SuccessMaker software program, published by Pearson Digital Learning. On average, using SuccessMaker has led to an increase of approximately 0.1 grade level per hour.
Students and parents who participated in the program were enthusiastic about the benefit the tutoring provided. Some students and parents commented:
• “Thank you for helping my child with math. She is now able to do her homework by herself.” • “My son is now more confident in reading, and chooses to read at home.” • “I liked playing the extra games with the other teachers. It helped me know more about school.” • “I learned new strategies that I could use in my regular class.” |
