| Program Description (written by provider) |
Chelsea Public Schools SES program provides the specialized reading instruction students need to meet their educational goals. Students attend small group classes twice a week in their own school. Students spend part of each class working in a small group with a highly trained Massachusetts licensed teacher. Students spend the second part of each class practicing and applying reading skills using motivating computer programs that are proven to increase students’ reading ability.
Chelsea Public Schools SES tutoring program is coordinated with Chelsea Public Schools regular reading program. Students attending the after school tutoring classes work on the same identified reading goals that they work o during the school day. The coordination of instruction between the school day program and the SES program ensures that students get extra practice in reading that is targeted to their individual needs.

| Evidence of Effectiveness (written by provider) |
Chelsea Public Schools After-School Program has a history of outstanding reading instruction for the past twelve years. Students in Chelsea’s After-School Program are given diagnostic reading exams at the beginning and end of the program and periodically to progress monitor each student’s degree of improvement. Such comparisons revealed significant increases in reading. An average of 80 to 95% of students attending after school classes at the Mary C. Burke Complex made gains in reading fluency from September to December. Forty-two percent of middle school students attending after school reading classes made gains in reading comprehension and 34% made gains in vocabulary as measured by the GRADE. |
