Provider: Brockton Public Schools

 Provider Details

 Program Description (written by provider)
The Supplemental Academic Success Program of the Brockton Public Schools provides tutoring in reading, writing, and mathematics to eligible students who have been identified as needing extra support in order to achieve grade level objectives in those subject areas. Highly qualified teachers provide tutoring. Our instructors presently teach in or have recently retired from the Brockton Public Schools. Students registered in the Brockton Supplemental Academic Success program will benefit from the extensive professional development and training provided to Brockton teachers. Our program works in tandem with the day program to provide “wrap around instruction” that has consistently shown gains in reading comprehension, mathematical problem solving, and written communication. We use a variety of materials that are aligned with the core text used in the Brockton Public Schools. We offer tutoring that is consistent with school based instruction. Instructors have access to the students’ latest MCAS scores, benchmark tests, and Individual Student Success Plans. Tutoring will be provided at the student’s school.
Evidence of Effectiveness (written by provider)
All of the district elementary schools offer before and after school programs. Academic support programs are offered after school at the middle school. District wide analysis of the pre and post testing for the previous school years indicate positive increases in students’ academic achievement and attitudes about school. The percentage of improvement for school year 2008-2009 was 18% in ELA /Reading and 15.9% in written communication. Mathematical problem solving increased by19%. Students’ learning skills increased by 25%. In addition to these significant gains, the Survey of After School Youth Outcomes showed that 95% of the students participating in our programs had additional gains in the areas of homework, behavior, engagement, initiative, and relationships with others.

Students and parents who participated in the program were enthusiastic about the benefits the tutoring provided. One third grade parent commented that the tutoring program had helped their child’s reading grade improve. 1,670 students participated in the Brockton Public Schools.
