| Program Description (written by provider) |
| Building Educated Leaders for Life (BELL) is a Boston based, non-profit organization committed to providing our students, whom we call scholars, with the best curriculum, teaching methods and program structure for building their reading, literacy and math skills. We provide scholars attending elementary schools that have partnered with BELL with an on-site after-school program that provides small to medium group learning sessions with an average instructor to scholar ratio of 1:6 to 1:10. Our nationally regarded, six week summer learning programs are centrally located at safe Boston public schools and community colleges. |
| Evidence of Effectiveness (written by provider) |
The following Evidence of Effectiveness information regarding our Boston 2007-2008 After School program was derived from the administration of: pre- and post- Stanford Diagnostic Reading Tests (SDRT-IV) (Harcourt Educational Measurement, 1996), a diagnostic assessment of grade level literacy skills; pre- and post- Stanford Diagnostic Mathematics Tests (SDMT-IV) (Harcourt Educational Measurement, 1996), a diagnostic assessment of grade level math skills; the Home & Community Social Behavior Scales (HCSBS) (Merrell, 1993), an observation rating scale designed for use by afterschool personnel to measure levels of social competency; Parent and Tutor surveys designed by BELL to assess perceptions of the program's content and efficacy as well as levels of involvement from these stakeholders.
Academic Performance Reading - 83% of BELL scholars maintained or increased their grade equivalent scores in reading. - Average gains were 7 months of reading skills over a 5 month period - 34% of scholars demonstrated gains of 1 full year or more Math - 84% of BELL scholars maintained or increased their grade equivalent scores in reading. - Average gains were 10 months of math skills over a 5 month period - 49% of scholars demonstrated gains of 1 full year or more
Normal Curve Equivalents (NCE) show a student's relative position compared to others in the same grade and tested at the same time of the year. A gain in NCE units indicates that the student has "grown" more than the norm group. The average student demonstrates no change and generally maintains his/her position for an NCE gain of zero. - The average NCE gain in reading for BELL scholars was 2.15 units, indicating that on average, BELL scholars outpaced students nationally. - The average NCE gain in math for BELL scholars was 3.47 units, indicating that on average, BELL scholars outpaced students nationally.
Percentile ranks range from a low of 1 to a high of 99, with 50 representing the middle score and denoting average performance. The closer scholars’ average percentile rank is to the norm group (50), the more BELL After School has narrowed the gap between scholars and their peers. - BELL scholars moved from the 37th percentile on average to the 40th percentile in reading. - BELL scholars moved from the 34th percentile on average to the 39th percentile in math.
Parent Surveys - 94% of parents indicated that BELL improved their child's reading skills. - 87% indicated that BELL improved their child's math scores. - 91% of parents indicated that BELL improved their child’s school work. - 97% of parents reported that they felt more engaged in their child's education because of BELL. - 76% of parents attended one or more school events - 17% attended three or more. - 99% of parents expressed satisfaction with the services BELL provided. |
