| Program Description (written by provider) |
| Boston Learning Center (BLC) is a non-profit tutorial center modeled after the renowned Harvard Literacy Laboratory at Harvard's Graduate School of Education. For more than twenty-six years, BLC has helped over 3,000 students from Boston's public, private, parochial, and charter schools. We have an experienced staff of instructors who provide private and small group tutoring for students in grades K-12 in every subject ranging from phonics to physics. Our unique focus is student motivation. We specialize in helping unmotivated, disengaged students - expecially teenagers in grades 6-12 - to become proactive learners who achieve academic success. Our program includes an initial parent/student consultation, diagnostic testing, communication with the classroom teacher, and an individualized curriculum designed to meet the needs of each student. |
| Evidence of Effectiveness (written by provider) |
Boston Learning Center combines motivational learning, accelerated learning strategies, and traditional tutoring in reading, writing, and math to help students achieve academic success in school. When a student begins our program, he/she is given a nationally-normed diagnostic test to determine strengths and weaknesses in the subjects where help is needed. Diagnostic tests are scored by our certified Curriculum Supervisor, and test results are reviewed with the parents.
At the end of every 8 weeks, students are give an informal assessment, and a Mid-Term Progress Report is sent to the parent. At the end of the tutorial program, students take a comprehensive post-test to measure their progress. Post-test results are sent to our Parents along with a Final Report from the Tutor. We also measure our effectiveness through surveys which are administered to students and parents at the end of the program.
In the 2007-2008 school year, we served 378 students throughout Massachusetts completed Boston Learning Center's SES tutoring program. The results were as follows:
• 86% of our students improved in reading, based on the Basic Achievement Skills Inventory (BASI). Average improvement was 1.8 grade levels after 30 hours of instruction.
• 77% of our students improved in math, based on the Basic Achievement Skills Inventory (BASI). Average improvement was 2.2 grade levels after 30 hours of instruction.
• 96% of respondents on our Parent Evaluation Surveys rate the quality of the tutoring services that their child received as either 'Good' or 'Excellent'. |
