| Program Description (written by provider) |
Learning Styles' tutors specialize in providing one-on-one tutoring for students at all grade levels and ability levels. Using this model we are able to determine challenge areas and focus on the areas of greatest need. For nearly 25 years Learning Styles has worked with thousands of students to improve the student’s academic and organizational skills. We are particularly noted for our ability to work with students who have IEPs and 504 Plans. An Individual Learning Plan is developed for each student and taught by highly qualified tutors. First we assess each student to find strength areas, challenges, and needs. Then we help the student to set and achieve goals. We use programs and strategies designed to help students quickly learn the strategies and skills they need to be successful learners. Computers, educational games or other hands-on activities are part of every session.
If student and parent agree, the parent or a mentor is invited to observe our tutoring sessions. A typical session lasts from 55 to 85 minutes. We provide feedback after each session in the form of a session recap explaining what the student has accomplished during the tutoring session. Session recaps are monitored by a learning specialist at Learning Styles who provides ongoing consultation to tutors. These session recaps can be e-mailed home and to the school after each appointment. They are also mailed to home and school each month. |

Learning Styles—A Professional Tutoring Service
Learning Styles is a local Massachusetts SES provider serving students in the western and southeastern parts of the state. As an example of our effectiveness, of the students enrolled in the 2007-2008 academic year, 90% attended the first session and took a reading or math pretest. 72% of the students attending the first session completed both pretesting and post testing. Using the Learning Styles guidelines for measuring progress (see below) 66% of our students who were pretested and post tested made good or exceptional progress in reading and 88% made good or exceptional progress in math.
Learning Styles Guidelines for Measuring Progress of Students Using standardized achievement tests or subtests in the designated area of need, the following guidelines were used to judge student progress: Exceptional Progress: A year or more of progress from pretest to post test during the tutoring period of approximately 5-6 calendar months or a standard score increase of 5 or more points during the tutoring period. Good Progress: Progress from pre to post-test was more than the number of months tutored or an increase in standard score from pre to post-test of 1 to 4 points.
Student and Parent Satisfaction Ratings Current Learning Styles students in our SES program were asked to answer the following question: Overall, what level of quality would you rate tutoring? On a scale of 1 to 5 with 5 being excellent, our students rated the quality of tutoring at 4.82. One student commented, "I think she (tutor) was very nice and she really listened to me. I liked coming there." In answer to the same quality of tutoring question parents gave tutoring by Learning Styles a score of 4.88. Parents were also overwhelmingly positive in feeling that their child's performance improved during the course of the school year. A parent commented, "I feel it helped. My son really needed that one-on-one attention. His tutor Mr. S. was very kind and informative." |
