Supplemental Educational Services

Provider: Tenacity, Inc

 Provider Details

 Program Description (written by provider)
Tenacity is a successful youth development organization in Boston that seeks “to improve the scholastic, character, and physical development of urban youth through a combination of academic support and tennis instruction/competition with a focus on life-skills.” Tenacit’s After-School Excellence Program (ASEP) works in close partnership with eight Boston Public Schools to deliver an intensive three-year program designed for “at-risk” middle school students. ASEP integrates reading/literacy support, life skills development and tennis/physical fitness activities in a structured environment. ASEP students attend three afternoons per week for 30 weeks, each of their sixth, seventh and eighth grade school years, for a total of 290 hours each school year, and 90 hours each summer.
Evidence of Effectiveness (written by provider)
At Tenacity, we employ a comprehensive outcomes measurement program designed to assess progress achieved by students as a function of their active participation in our After-School Excellence Program (ASEP). The after-school program for middle school students focuses on the development of reading skills through a customized literacy curriculum. To measure progress during the course of participation in ASEP, students are evaluated in the fall and spring of each academic year. Improvement is measured for students within each year of participation, and across all years of participation.

Results from the outcomes measurement program are available for the first two years of implementation (2004-2005, 2005-2007) and the results for the 2008-2009 school year are currently being analyzed. The findings indicate that students have achieved significant gains in four areas: (1) reading skills, (2) participation in and enjoyment of reading, (3) academic competency in the area of English Language Arts, and (4) executive functioning and organizational skills that impact learning and academic performance.
