The instructional model developed in these protocols is aligned with and contributes to the implementation of The Massachusetts Tiered System of Supports (MTSS). Through these protocols leadership teams will increase their understanding of both mathematics and of the variability of learners in the classroom, enabling them to support educators in meeting the needs of all students. Leadership teams will learn about accessibility strategies that will result in increased access to core instruction (Tier 1).
Each protocol is designed to facilitate a 2-hour session. Each session includes a series of activities and discussions for the leadership team to build the team's collective knowledge. Time should be allotted for a follow up session for each of the 5 protocols in which the team can reflect and expand upon the activities and discussions as needed. The expectation is that after the completing all of the protocols and follow-up sessions, the team will have developed a plan to share the learning school-wide. In some sessions, the mathematics content will be the focus; in other sessions, the focus will be on special education. In the final sessions, mathematics and special education are woven together.
