Secondary Transition Capacity-Building Conference: Required District/School Needs Assessment

On April 24, 2013, the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education will hold a district and school capacity-building conference on secondary transition in Marlborough, Massachusetts, at the Best Western Royal Plaza Hotel and Trade Center.

Four-person leadership teams representing districts, collaboratives, vocational-technical schools, and approved private schools may apply to attend. The purposes of this conference are:

  1. to provide district leadership teams with essential knowledge about the transition planning process, both as a cohesive, integrated system and from the perspective of evidence-based practices in self determination; transition assessment; career development; postsecondary education and training; and family engagement and community collaboration
  2. to engage district leadership teams in a data-based planning process designed to improve postsecondary outcomes for all students with disabilities.

The conference application will be posted on the Department's website on or before March 1, 2013.

As a condition of participation, districts, collaboratives, vocational-technical schools, and approved private schools must complete and submit, in advance of the conference, a District/School Secondary Transition Needs Assessment.

Download this form here: Download PDF Document  Download MS WORD Document.

This needs assessment will be integrated into capacity-building activities during the conference.

Due to space considerations, we can accommodate up to 120 leadership teams at the conference. If more than 120 leadership teams apply to attend, participants may be selected on the basis of need as determined by LEA accountability status, need for special education technical assistance or intervention, and/or Indicator 13 status. Since space is limited, the Department may also consider team composition and the completeness of the submitted self assessment when selecting conference participants. The Department will seek to ensure that diverse regions of the state and district/school sizes are represented at the conference.

Completed needs assessments must be submitted to Amanda Green at agreen@doe.mass.edu, on or before March 1, 2013. Early submission of completed assessments is appreciated; there is no need to wait until the registration site opens.

Questions? Amanda Green, 781-338-3368, agreen@doe.mass.edu
