About Trauma: Effects of Trauma

Those individuals working with the child may not know of a child's exposure to traumatic events. Children exposed to trauma have a wide band of behaviors and reactions. It is critical that educators, schools, and communities build awareness and recognition around the effects of trauma on children and adults and respond with appropriate actions and interventions. Trauma impacts the entire scope of development for a child to include emotional, physical, psychomotor, cognitive, learning and behavioral arenas. The following sections provide a partial representation of what may be happening developmentally for a child exposed to trauma.
