Level 5 Schools Update - Paul A. Dever Elementary School

To:
Members of the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education
From:
Jeffrey C. Riley, Commissioner
Date:
May 11, 2018

In the fall of 2013, the Paul A. Dever Elementary School (Dever) was designated as chronically underperforming (or Level 5) by Commissioner Mitchell D. Chester in response to its low performance and lack of improvement as an underperforming (Level 4) school. On July 1, 2017, Dr. Tommy Chang, Superintendent of Boston Public Schools, assumed responsibility for the implementation of the Dever turnaround plan. In August 2017, Acting Commissioner Wulfson determined that the school would remain in chronically underperforming status and the turnaround plan was renewed for an additional three years.

At the meeting of the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education on May 22, 2018, Dr. Chang will provide an update on the Dever. The presentation will focus on progress the school is making in implementing its turnaround plan, including a focus on teaching and learning, staff retention, and school climate.
