School and District Accountability and Assistance Advisory Council Appointment

To:Members of the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education
From:Mitchell D. Chester, Ed.D., Commissioner
Date:November 6, 2009

The School and District Accountability and Assistance Advisory Council, established by General Laws c. 15, § 1G as amended by Chapter 311 of the Acts of 2008, advises the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education on matters pertaining to the development and implementation of the Commonwealth's School and District Accountability and Assistance system. The 15 member council has prescribed membership in statute as follows: 6 members selected from among three nominees offered by identified stakeholder groups (Massachusetts Association of School Superintendents; Massachusetts Teachers Association and the American Federation of Teachers of Massachusetts; Massachusetts Secondary School Administrators Association; Massachusetts Elementary School Principals Association; Massachusetts Association of School Committees; and Massachusetts Charter Public School Association); 1 representative of business/industry "with a demonstrated commitment to education"; and 8 at- large members with "demonstrated record of achievement or academic expertise" in areas related to accountability and assistance.

One member serving as an at-large appointee recently resigned. In the October 27, 2009 Commissioner's Update, I solicited nominees to fill this position. I am recommending Dorsey Yearley, Executive Director of EDCO Collaborative, to you for appointment to the vacant at- large seat on the School and District Accountability and Assistance Advisory Council.

The full membership of the advisory council is included for your reference.
