Redefining Low Income - A New Metric for K-12 Education Data

To:
Members of the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education
From:
Mitchell D. Chester, Ed.D., Commissioner
Date:

Last month I reported that the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education is implementing a new methodology for identifying and counting "low income" students in our public schools. Attached is an information sheet that explains why it was necessary to make this change and what the impact will be on various programs. This change will likely generate a lot of interest among educators and the public. I have asked deputy commissioner Jeff Wulfson and Robert Curtin, our manager of education data services, to discuss these changes at the Board's June 23 meeting and answer any questions you may have.
