Lawrence Public Schools: Update on Receivership

To:
Members of the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education
From:
Mitchell D. Chester, Ed.D., Commissioner
Date:
October 9, 2015

The Board of Elementary and Secondary Education placed the Lawrence Public Schools in Level 5 in November 2011, the first district in the state to be designated Level 5. On May 30, 2012, Lawrence Receiver Jeff Riley and I released a Level 5 District Turnaround Plan for Lawrence. On May 29, 2015, I renewed Lawrence's Level 5 District Turnaround Plan for an additional three-year term.

Jeff Riley and members of his team will join us at the October 20, 2015 Board meeting to update the Board in more detail regarding Lawrence's progress and next steps. The update will include a brief overview of the renewed Lawrence Turnaround Plan and the rationale behind it, a historical analysis of the work to date, the recent MCAS results, progress of the high school redesign initiative, and the district's expansion of enrichment programming for students.
