Massachusetts 21st Century Community Learning Centers - Exemplary Programs Grant

Purpose: The purpose of the federally-funded Massachusetts 21st Century Community Learning Centers (CCLC) Exemplary Program is to expand and enhance the mentoring capacity of community learning centers that operate during out-of-school hours and provide students with academic enrichment opportunities along with other activities designed to complement the students' school-day program. Community learning centers may also offer literacy and related educational development to families of students participating in the 21st CCLC programs. Note: Grants were submitted and awarded in two categories based on the level of experience, funding, and expectations. The categories were Exemplary (E); and Demonstration (D).

Result of Funding: This grant program will enable thirteen school districts and their partnering organizations to expand and enhance the statewide network of exemplary 21st CCLC programs that provide mentoring, peer support, training, and technical assistance and that serve as learning labs for new and existing 21st CCLC programs as well as other out-of-school time programs across the Commonwealth. These programs will provide approximately 800 youth in grades K-12 with academic enrichment opportunities along with other activities designed to complement the students' school-day program. The services for students will take place at 14 sites before and after school as well as during the summer. Grant awards range from $50,000 to $105,000.
