FY2023: HSSIEP: High School Senior Internship in Education Project

Fund Code: 435

Purpose:

The purpose of the grant is to help grow the educator pipeline by engaging aspiring educators with paid internships that provide opportunities to explore the teaching profession in an authentic and meaningful way. High School student interns, with a focus on diverse candidates, will gain valuable experience in a career-readiness program that offers a hands-on opportunity to work with elementary students in a classroom setting, learn instructional methods from mentor instructors, and engage in educator preparation curriculum. The program should be prioritized as school districts across the country and in Massachusetts are facing a teacher shortage, accelerated by the impacts of the pandemic. If high school students are exposed early to the field of education and see themselves in the role of educators, then they are more informed and excited about the profession as a career choice.

Priorities:

The priorities for the grant include but are not limited to:

  • Working directly with districts to identify and support a district lead responsible for student intern recruitment, student internship placement, the monitoring of student progress throughout the internship, and professional development delivery to students.
  • Owning the fiscal responsibility of ensuring that students earn a stipend or wages for their participation as a student intern.
  • Addressing the diversity gap in education by preparing a future of diverse educators to be successful in the education field.
  • Providing status updates via quarterly reports and email requests regarding data related to student interns and their placements.
  • Ensuring that students complete a work-based learning plan.
  • Ensuring that the program design and delivery responds to students' academic, social, emotional, and mental health needs.
  • Addressing one or more of the following: the academic impact of lost instructional time, summer learning and enrichment programming, comprehensive afterschool programming.
  • Addressing the disproportionate impact of COVID-19 on certain groups of students and equity. Examples of student groups include students from low-income families, underrepresented racial or ethnic backgrounds, underrepresented genders, English learners, students with disabilities, students experiencing homelessness, children or youth in foster care, migratory students, or other groups of students (e.g., youth involved in the criminal justice system, students who have missed the most in-person during 2019-20 and 2020-21 school years, students who did not consistently participate in remote instruction when offered during school building closures).
